Handspun yarn often comes in a single hank—one of a kind, and just waiting to be made into a small treasure. These Wabi-Sabi Mitts were designed for a single hank of handspun yarn. The model mitts use approximately 94 yards, but the pattern is written so more or less could be used.

The single hank of handspun yarn is wound into a center pull ball, then both mitts are cast on at the same time—each from opposite ends of the ball. Both mitts are worked at the same time, until only enough yarn to bind off both mitts remains.

One size, to fit average adult hand

Finished Measurements
7½" / 19 cm hand circumference.

Yarn
CYCA #4 Worsted weight: approx 94 yards.
Shown in: Handspun alpaca.

Knitting Needles
Size US 8 / 5 mm: straight needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions
stitch markers; tapestry needle.

Gauge
16 sts and 22 rows = 4" / 10 cm in St st. Take time to save time, check your gauge.

Notes

To use an entire hank of handspun yarn, wind ball into a center pull ball and CO both mitts onto the same needle, each with a separate end of the ball. Work both mitts at the same time.

Pattern

Hand
CO 31 sts with 1 end of center pull ball; CO 31 sts onto the same needle with the other end of center pull ball.
(Note: Leave a tail long enough to sew the seam of the mitts.)

Continue working both mitts at the same time, with separate ends of the same ball of yarn.

Knit 4 rows, end after a WS row.

Work 6 rows even in St st (knit on RS, purl on WS), end after a WS row.

Right Mitt
Shape Thumb Gusset (RS): K2, pm, k1, turn so WS is facing, use Cable Method to CO 11 sts, turn so RS is facing, k1, pm, knit to end—42 sts.

Left Mitt
Shape Thumb Gusset (RS): K27, pm, k1, turn so WS is facing, use Cable Method to CO 11 sts, turn so RS is facing, k1, pm, knit to end—42 sts.

Both Mitts
Purl 1 WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Knit to m, sl m, ssk, knit to 2 sts before next m, k2tog, sl m, knit to end—2 sts dec’d.
Rep the previous 2 rows 4 more times—32 sts rem.

Purl 1 WS row.
Dec Row (RS): Knit to m, remove m, sk2p, remove m, knit to end—30 sts rem.
Purl 1 WS row.

Both Cuffs
Row 1 (RS): K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.
Row 2 (WS): P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Rep the previous 2 rows until enough yarn rema to BO each mitt.
BO all sts in rib.

Finishing
Block to measurements.
Sew from hand through half of ribbing section.
Weave in ends.

Cable Cast On Method:
*Insert right needle between first 2 sts on left needle, k1 from this position leaving the first st on left needle and sl new st onto left needle; rep from * for desired number of sts. View a video tutorial.
