animal friendly:
The sheep who grew this wool live in Peru, where they live freely in the highlands and eat natural grasses (as oposed to farmed grass). They have plenty of space to roam around thus their impact on the terrain is minimal. The animals are not exposed to any chemicals.
The high altitude and dry conditions of Peru prevent flystrike from being a large threat. Therefore serious precautions such as mulesing are unnecessary.
dye free:
Dye free means just thatthere was no dye used on the fiber at any time during the processing of the yarn. The color of this yarn is just as it was when the sheep sported it around their local field.
No bleach or other chemicals have been used on the fiber.
why I like it: In addition to this yarn being friendly to the earth and animals, I also found a lot of joy by working with it. I find it to be very soft for a natural wool yarn. I also love that it comes in 250 gram hanks! So few hanks of yarn can go so far, for such a small cost.
Many thanks to Steve at Cascade Yarns for his cooperation in helping me to understand as much as possible about the processing of Cascade's Eco Wool yarn.
